Extreme Ford F-150 Lightning Supertruck Gunning For Pikes Peak Record

This doesn’t look like a run-of-the-mill F-150 Lightning.

Ford Performance has released a teaser for a new high-performance version of the F-150 Lightning. Before you get your checkbooks ready, this demonstrator build will represent the Blue Oval at the 102nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The teaser image showcases something low and wide, with what appears to be a massive rear wing. Perhaps this is the Supertruck that F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo teased last year.

The Dearborn-based automaker hasn’t shared any additional information, except that it will race as competitor No. 150. Neat. Last year, Ford shattered records with the electric SuperVan 4.2, which set a blistering time of 8:47.682 with Romain Dumas behind the wheel. This was the fastest sprint in the Open Class, and Ford will want to improve on 2023’s performance.

The standard F-150 Lightning produces 580 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque, which is a lot of muscle. But at Pikes Peak, those numbers won’t cut it. Let’s not forget the electric truck weighs a scandalous 6,893 lbs in Platinum guise and has handling tuned for comfort and off-roading.

There’s a possibility the automaker could borrow the drivetrain from the ballistic Mustang Mach-E 1400, which produces 1,400 horses courtesy of seven electric motors. We also wouldn’t be surprised if it shares several components with the aforementioned Supervan. In other words, this will be a custom creation unrelated to the actual F-150 Lightning.

To prepare the SuperVan 4.2 for Pikes Peak, Ford Performance kitted the crazy commercial vehicle out with special aerodynamics. This includes a carbon fiber rear spoiler and front splitter that kept it planted on the challenging road. As we know, Pikes Peak takes no prisoners, so Ford will want to give the F-150 Lightning a fighting chance with the very best aerodynamic trickery.

Perhaps the battery pack will be smaller, trimming some fat off the hefty truck. Last year, Ford Performance revealed the F-150 Switchgear, a Lightning-based demonstrator build with improvements such as Fox three-inch internal bypass shock absorbers, additional suspension travel, and more ground clearance, to name a few.

All will be revealed in the coming months, but an unveiling will take place near June. We’ll see the new F-150 Lightning in action shortly, with qualifying taking place from June 18-20 and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb kicking off on June 23.
